Brighton and Hove District Girls Football

Well done Imarni!

Massive congratulations and well done to Imarni in Year 6 for her ongoing brilliant performances for the Brighton and Hove District Schools Under 11 Girls football team.  Earlier in the year, Imarni successfully attended trials with girls from all over Brighton and Hove and now plays regularly for this very successful team. At the time of writing, this team have made it into a cup semi-final and in the ten games Imarni has been involved they have won seven! She has also been named player of the match on one occasion for her exploits as a defender! Tim Herbert, the manager of the team (and our CAW learning mentor Mr Herbert’s dad!) said Imarni represents our ‘school well’ and shows ‘brilliant attitude and improvement’.  We are so proud of you Imarni- keep it up and let us know how you get on in the remainder of the season.

CAW Basketball Tournament

CAW retain Basketball Tournament trophy!

Huge congratulations to the victorious CAW basketball team who won every match to win our annual basketball tournament! The boys and girls from Year 6 played fantastically well and all of the children scored at least one basket in the tournament! There was some great shooting to score 29 baskets in total, as well as some fantastic dribbling and passing.

A massive well done to all the players- we are so proud of you all!

Indoor Athletics

Great performance at the Indoor Athletics!

18 boys and girls from Year 6 went to BACA Sports hall on Wednesday 5th February to compete in an indoor athletics competition against 6 other schools.  The children did our school proud, taking part in events like 1 and 2 lap relays, standing triple jump, chest push throw and speed bounce.  There were some great individual performances, with some children winning their race or event.  A special mention goes to Laura, Imarni, Pheobe, Remy, Chad and Jadon who all did 37+ jumps in 20 seconds over the speed bounce mat! As a team we came 5th overall with 178 points.

Well done to all of the team- you ran, jumped and threw brilliantly.

Basketball v St John the Baptist

Honours even in basketball friendlies

The members of the Year 5 and 6 autumn term basketball club participated in three friendly matches against St John the Baptist on Friday 17th January.  In the three matches, we won the first18-6, drew the second game 10-10 and lost the third match 16-0.  So having won one, drawn one and lost one the afternoon was declared a draw between the two schools- how brilliantly sporting!  The children played excellently, showing confident dribbling and shooting skills whilst always trying to find a teammate with effective passing technique.  We look forward to see how the school basketball team performs in our annual basketball tournament in February (as holders!)!

Year 6 football friendly

Late winner in Year 6 local derby football match

Well done to the children in Year 6 who played St Mark’s in a football friendly match on Tuesday 7th January.  The match was 8aside and was played at Manor Gym, although we took 14 players so everyone played at least a 20 minute half each.  All of the players represented the school brilliantly and played their best, demonstrating great passing, shooting and dribbling skills.  We were the better team in the first half and deservedly led 1-0 at half time thanks to Chad‘s goal. St Mark’s improved in the second half and we had to defend our lead well.  Unfortunately a deflected goal allowed them to equalise with only about five minutes remaining.  However, in the last two minutes Nate found himself unmarked and slotted past their impressive keeper to win the game 2-1.  It was a close match, played by two great teams who tried their best and showed great respect for one another.  Congratulations to all the children involved, especially Gary, Callum and Caden who were playing their first match in Year 6!

Year 6 Football League

Year 6 Football League Results

Congratulations to the children involved in the Brighton schools football league.  Many of our players had not played in any competitive football matches before this league (other than school friendlies).  During the five matches we have improved dramatically as a team.  We have learnt to be better defenders by ensuring we have good positioning on big football pitches that we have played at (which are much bigger than the playground!). We have also improved our attacking by being accurate in our passing to teammates and moving the ball quickly forwards.   We finished the league with 1 win, 1 draw and 3 defeats, which should place us 5th overall out of 6 teams.  Well done to all the children involved over the autumn term!

Cross Country

30 children complete 2km Cross Country!

A huge well done to the children in Year 5 and 6 who completed the 2km cross country at Waterhall playing fields! They ran brilliantly in cold conditions and all finished the long, hilly course.  Special congratulations to Remy who finished 8th out of 250 Year 6 boys and he goes through to the Sussex County Finals! Well done to him and all the brilliant children who ran so well- we are so proud.

Amazing Effort at the Change4Life Festival!

Well done and congratulations to the amazing Year 6 children who did so well at the Change4Life festival recently.  On Thursday 7th November they travelled to the Sussex Cricket Ground indoor centre and along with four other schools, participated in a range of fun yet physically demanding activities!  Activities consisted of target throws, obstacle courses, sprint races and gymnastic balances.  They all had a fantastic time, gave 100% effort in every activity and represented the school brilliantly.  Well done to all of these children we are extremely proud of you all!

Girls 7aside Football Tournament

Runners Up in Girls Football  Tournament!

Huge congratulations to all the Year 5 and 6 girls football team who finished 2nd and UNDEFEATED in the Brighton and Hove girls tournament! With 12 schools involved, the girls played in six matches, winning three and drawing three.  We didn’t conced a goal in any match and scored four of our own – one from Roxy and three by Imarni.  Congratulations to Kleo for great saves and Savannah, Tamzin and Suranne for excellent tackles in defence.  Well done Oliwia and Laura for great dribbling at pace to help us attack and to Roxy and Imarni for great shooting.  What a fantastic result all round! We look forward to the girls football league in the spring!

Bevendean Football Tournament

Great perseverance shown by Year 5 footballers

Well done to the Year 4 and 5 footballers who represented the school brilliantly at the first Bevendean football tournament.  We played against some excellent teams and it was an afternoon full of defending, but the team kept persevering really well. We lost in the first few matches and then conceded in the last minute against an excellent Bevendean team to lose 2-1.  In the last match against Moulsecoomb Harry scored a good goal to help us finish with a 1-1 draw with a good performance.  Well done all involved!

Tag Rugby

Great skills on show at the Tag Rugby Festival!

12 fantastic children went to Cardinal Newman high school on Thursday 17th October to play in a tag rugby festival. They played in a variety of games and activities led by Cardinal Newman sports leaders and practised their tagging and try scoring skills. They then played in some friendly matches against other schools and scored three tries! Well done to all involved – you thoroughly enjoyed yourselves and showed the enthusiasm for sport many children at our school have!  We are proud of you all.

Brighton 7aside Football Tournament

Promising showing by CAW at Year 6 football tournament

Well done to the children involved in the Year 6 football tournament on 27th September at East Brighton Park.  The event involved 23 different Brighton and Hove primary schools and the standard was high.  We played six matches, winning 1, drawing 2 and losing 3.  Our highlight was beating Fairlight 2-1 with goals from Imarni and Ayan! The children played really well and they got better in each match against some increasingly tricky opponents.  We look forward to the 9aside football league starting in October!

After winning the cluster hockey tournament earlier in the term, CAW got through to the quickstick hockey finals.  We played against 8 other schools who had done the same thing, and came 3rd overall! Amazing!

Let's Dance

Let's Dance 2019

26 children from Year 6 performed at the Brighton Dome on Thursday 14th March in the Let’s Dance festival, which is the biggest schools festival of dance in the whole country!

The song that they performed to was Woodkid’s ‘Run Boy Run’, and the title of their dance was ‘Fight or Flight’. The theme of the dance was about what happens when we face a fear: do we run (Flight) or do we stand up to it (Fight)?  In the months leading up to the performance the children worked incredibly hard to practise their dance moves, and the hard work paid off! Their performance was amazing, full of energy and expression! Many parents and staff came to watch their performance at the Brighton Dome and were wowed by it!  Well done to all the fantastic children who took part- the school is incredibly proud of you all.

Quicksticks Hockey

CAW win 6 out of 6 at Hockey Tournament!

Huge congratulations to the victorious CAW quicksticks hockey team who won six matches at the hockey tournament! CAW win basketball tournament!

CAW win Annual Basketball Tournament!

Huge congratulations to the victorious CAW basketball team who won our annual basketball tournament! After tough friendlies against other schools in recent weeks, our team used their experience to play with style and score many points in a thoroughly deserved victory! After winning group matches 14-2 against Coombe Road and 20-6 against Coldean, CAW felt confident in the final.  However Coldean, the group runners up, began strongly and took a 4-2 lead.  Yet our team stormed back to win convincingly 18-6 and win the trophy for the first time.  Congratulations to all- a fantastic achievement!

Indoor Athletics

Superb Indoor Athletics Performance!

Well done to the Year 5 and 6 indoor athletics team that competed in the Brighton and Hove Indoor Athletics at BACA on 30th January. The children competed in a range of running races and field events (including throwing and jumping events) and scored points for our school.  Out of the 8 schools there, we came 4th- a great performance! We have also found out that our points total was the 15th best out of the 30 Brighton and Hove schools that took part, which is a fantastic achievement! Congratulations to the 9 girls and 9 boys that did our school so proud.

Basketball Friendlies v St John the Baptist

Congratulations to the children who played against St John the Baptists school on Thursday 24th January.  Ahead of our annual basketball tournament in February, our teams played well and at times learnt a lot against some excellent visiting players.  Our basketball players were split into 3 teams.  Team 1 lost 22-6 in their match, Team 2 lost 18-8 and Team 3 drew 10-10 in a superbly close match.  All the children showed resilience and all teams played better in the second half- showing that playing against strong opposition helps us improve.  We are excited to see how we fare in the tournament in a couple of weeks.

Year 5 and 6 Cross Country

Year 5 and 6 Cross Country

A huge well done to all the fantastic participants from Year 5 and 6 that took part in the Brighton Schools Cross Country in November.  32 children from our school joined over 1000 Year 5 and 6 girls in a 2km race at Brighton Rugby Club!

The boys and girls in their CAW blue Tshirts did amazingly and showed great determination and resilience to run such a long way! They all finished their two kilometres with a sprint and gave it their best.  Their behaviour was amazing and they did our school so proud- well done to everyone who took part!

Year 6 Girls Football

Year 6 Girls Brighton and Hove Schools football tournament

On Friday 5th October, the Year 6 girls took part in the annual Brighton and Hove schools football tournament at East Brighton Park.  On a hot afternoon CAW won three out of six matches at the tournament, meaning they finished in the top 10 out of 23 schools! This is the best performance we have had at this tournament for many years.  Goals from Summer, Imarni and Summa helped us to our victories, but well done to all 10 girls for helping us to such a great performance!

Year 6 Tag Rugby

Tag Rugby team score lots of tries!

Well done to all the Year 6 children who participated so brilliantly at the Brighton and Hove Schools Tag Rugby Festival.  Boys and girls from CAW went to Brighton Rugby Club at Waterhall on Wednesday 3rd October to partake in some rugby skill games and activities, before playing three games against other schools.  The children played really well, learnt lots and scored many tries against the other schools.  Tries were scored by Alexander, Sami, Jay and Aaron. Congratulations to all on a great tag rugby afternoon and for representing your school so well!

Year 6 Boys Football Tournament

CAW Boys First Football Competition of the Season

Well done to the Year 6 boys who played in their first football tournament of the year on Wednesday 26th September.  Unfortunately, despite holding the lead in four different matches, we drew three and lost three of our six 7aside matches.  The boys got better as the tournament progressed and scored some spectacular goals through Francis, Nura and an amazing header from Logyn!

We look forward to seeing how they get on once the 9aside football league starts in a couple of weeks!!

Gymnastics and Dance

End of year Dance and Gymnastics Performances

Pippa's Gymnastics and Dance Clubs performed to family and friends in the last weeks of the summer term in July 2018.  Here are some pictures and videos to show off their fantastic performances which they have clearly rehearsed so hard!

Sports Day 2018

School Sports Day

We finally got a sunny Sports Day for the first time in four years and it was a great day!  All the children did fantastic athletics throughout the day - throwing great distances; jumping really far and running incredibly fast! All the events were scored across the whole of Sports Day and when added up together the final points were:

Air: 1299 points

Earth: 1358 points

Fire: 1464 points

Water: 1354 points

Congratulations to Fire for winning the CAW Shield for 2018.  An unbelievable turnaround as they came 4th last year! It was great to see so many parents, carers and friends of the school attending - thank you so much to everyone for making it a very enjoyable day for the children.

Withdean Athletics

Withdean Athletics Competition

Well done to all the children in Years 4,5 and 6 who did tremendously at the annual Withdean Athletics inter school competition (Wednesday 20th June).  In our group we came joint third (our best in many years!) and we came 3rd out of 24 schools in throwing events! Congratulations to all the children who performed so well - what a great team performance!

Year 4 Football

Year 4 Football Friendly v St John the Baptists

Congratulations to all the Year 4 children who took part in the match on Tuesday 5th June against St John the Baptists.  Many of the children were playing in their first competitive fixture and played brilliantly! We lost 4-2 in an end to end match, full of chances for both teams.

In the first half we had lots of chances to score but couldn’t get our shots on target.  St Johns played well and were 2-0 up at half time.  We started the second half really well, trying to play quicker and almost scored, only for St John’s to score again.  All the team showed great resilience to stay in the match, and goals from Chad and Remy took the score to 3-2.  Although we kept attacking to find an equaliser, St John’s scored in the last few minutes to win the game 4-2.

It was a great effort from all the children involved and the school is very proud of you!

Year 4 Trigolf

Year 4 Trigolf tournament

Well done to all the ten Year 4 children who went to the trigolf tournament on Thursday 10th May.  Against 11 other schools, they putted and chipped at targets as a team.  They represented the school fantastically and came 9th overall.  Well done all the children involved!!

Sports Relief 2018

Thank you to everyone for their amazing fundraising efforts for Sports Relief this year! By buying wristbands and wearing our favourite Sportsperson outfits, we raised a magnificent £329.67!

A particular highlight of the day was our ‘Sporty Start’ on the playground, which staff, parents and children got involved in.  Thank you to all!

Girls Football Match v Brunswick

Girls draw against Brunswick!

Well done to the Year 4, 5 and 6 girls who drew 0-0 away at Brunswick school on Monday 26th March.  In a very tight, closely fought match, neither team could break down their opponent’s solid defence.  The girls played really well, in particular working hard to tackle and stop Brunswick having space to score.

Leah G made one fantastic save with her right hand, and Alexis and Aliyah were superb at leading the defence.

Leen, Rebecca, Summer, Chloe and Louise worked hard to tackle and get the ball forwards.

Esme and Regan (playing a match for the first time) kept their positions well as wide midfielders and looked to dribble forwards.

Imarni worked hard up front, regularly dribbling the ball towards the opponent’s goal.

Well done to all the girls who played!

Let's Dance 2018

26 children from Year 6 performed at the Brighton Dome on Monday 19th March in the Let’s Dance festival.  This is the biggest schools festival of dance in the whole country!

The song that they performed to was Mint Royale’s ‘Singin in the Rain’.  In the months leading up to the performance the children worked incredibly hard to practise their dance moves, and the hard work paid off! Their performance was amazing, full of energy and attitude! Many parents and staff came to watch their performance at the Brighton Dome and were wowed by it!  Well done to all the fantastic children who took part- the school is incredibly proud of you all.

Hockey Tournament

Runners Up in Hockey Tournament

by Goal Difference!

What a performance by our school hockey team in the Brighton and Hove Quicksticks competition! In our first performance in the tournament, under the watchful eye of our lucky mascot Mr Church,  our team played so well, winning four out of five matches and scoring 16 goals! Unfortunately St Martins, the only team to beat us, came first in the league having also won four of their matches but also scoring more goals than we did.  However we are extremely proud of the performances of all the players in our team (and are hopeful for next year seeing as five of the squad are only in Year 5!). We defended excellently as a team and scored some great goals. Well done to all- what a brilliant result!

Basketball Tournament

Runners Up in CAW Basketball Tournament

In the first ever 4 team CAW basketball tournament, our team finished runners up in the final on Monday evening in an epic final!

Our school now hosts an annual 4 team tournament in our gym, and the invited schools are Queen’s Park, Coombe Road and Coldean primary schools.  In the tournament our team played really well, beating Queen’s Park 14-2 and Coombe Road 12-8.

As Coldean won both their matches too, it came down to the last match between them and us.  In a cracking match we lost a tight contest 8-6.  It was a great performance by our team who just couldn’t convert their many chances.

Well done to our team for coming so close to winning - we look forward to the tournament again next year!

A huge thank you to our Sports Leaders Savannah, Jaiden and Ethen who helped score and host our tournament- they did our school incredibly proud!

Year 5/6 Football

Ecstasy and Agony in the Cups!

In the last two weeks our Year 5/6 boy’s football team has suffered both disappointment and joy from last minute goals!

In the Fitzgerald Cup our team travelled to Saltdean. With debutant Malik scoring twice and Lyrik once, we were ahead 3-0 after 15 minutes.  Saltdean pegged us back well though, equalising half way through the second half.  However our team showed real determination to keep playing, and in the last minute a cross from Maison was turned into their own net by their goalie, meaning we won 4-3! This means CAW are through to the quarter finals for the first time in many years!

One week later we travelled to Cottesmore St Mary’s school and played in an epic match in the Baker Cup.  With many chances for both teams, it somehow remained 0-0 at half time.  In a brilliant game Cottesmore scored early in the second half, but a header from Malik helped equalise.  Yet in the last two minutes, they scored a great goal from a corner, meaning they won 2-1.  It was a disappointing end to a thrilling match but it was a fantastic performance from the team, and we take this momentum into the quarters of the Fitzgerald Cup!

Sports Crew

CAW Sports Crew 2018

These are the boys and girls selected to be our School Sports Crew - the student voice for what happens with PE and Sport in our school.  Their role this year will include surveying all children about the kind of active games and activities they want at breaktimes; telling Mr Chick what after school clubs will be popular and running small competitions. Look out for their shiny Sports Crew badge!

Basketball Matches v St John the Baptist’s

Well done to the Year 5 and 6 children who played in the three friendly matches against St John the Baptist!

In the first game our Team 1 won by 12 points to 0. In the second game Team 2 drew 8-8 and then Team 3 lost the final match 12-6.  All three teams showed great basketball skills: passing well, dribbling with confidence and shooting with accuracy. Congratulations everyone and Coach McAdam!

Team 1: Destiny, Trai, Rio Q, Ethan Dawson.

Team 2: Maison B, Harley P, Malik, Francis.

Team 3: Crystal, Ethan Doherty, Rebecca, Jaiden, Freddie.

A big thank you to all those who came to support (the gym was packed!) and for Savannah for scoring the game.

Indoor Athletics

Indoor athletics team 5(1)

Great Indoor Athletics Performance!

Congratulations to all the Year 5 and 6 children who participated in the indoor athletics at BACA on Wednesday 10th January! In the best performance for many years at this competition, our school finished 3rd out of 8 Brighton and Hove primary schools!

The boys and girls did our school proud - winning many of their running races, throwing and jumping events.  A particular well done to all the children who did the speed bounce (jumping over a small hurdle as many times as you can in 20 seconds), as their scores of over 36 each helped us to our 3rd place!

Well done to all involved. smiley

Football Update

Fantastic Finish to Boys Football League Season!

Well done to the Year 5 and 6 boys who finished their schools league campaign with back to back 4-1 victories! This should see City Academy finish 4th out of 7 schools as they ended the league season on a high.

On Tuesday 5th December they travelled to Hertford Primary and started the game very well, with a great first half performance which ended with Michael toepoking into the roof of the net- to help us lead 1-0 at half time.  Despite an excellent 30 yard drilled goal from Hertford, we continued to dominate the game in the second half and thanks to two goals from Maison and one from Destiny we won the match 4-1.

On Wednesday 6th December we played Queens Park at Manor Gym under the floodlights, full of confidence after our victory the night before.  In a match we created many chances in, Queens Park unexpectedly scored to take the lead but we stayed calm to equalise and make it 1-1 before half time.  In the second half we continued to dominate and eventually took the lead through Maison’s curling strike.  Two more late goals from Rio and Maison sealed a second 4-1 victory in as many days.

Well done to all the boys involved!

A huge well done to all the fantastic participants from Year 5 and 6 that took part in the Brighton Schools Cross Country on Wednesday 22nd November.  30 children from our school joined 1266 Year 5 and 6 girls in a 2km race at Brighton Rugby Club!

A particular well done goes to our superstar runner Harley Pettitt in Year 6, who finished 37th out of approximately 250 boys- a great achievement Harley, well done!

Football Update

School Football Update- November 2017

It has been a very busy couple of week at City Academy with four different football matches taking place since the half term break!

Firstly, the Year 6 football league has begun and our team have played twice.  In their first match they lost a see-saw battle against Fairlight 5-3, before bouncing back with a 6-1 win over Saltdean ‘B’.

Our Year 5 team played at Coldean and lost a good match 6-2, with goals coming from Ali and Nura.

Our girls team, involving girls from Year 4, 5 and 6, also travelled to Coldean for a friendly match and their match was a very fair contest which finished 0-0

Well done to all players for representing our school so well!

The children first took part in some rugby activities, then played in three matches against other schools.  Both teams were victorious in one match each, and scored lots of tries.   Well done to all who took part- they did the school proud with their enthusiasm for the sport and teamwork in the matches!

Boys Football Tournament

Boys Football Tournament 29th September

On Friday 29th October, we ambled over to East Brighton Park with Mr Berry and Mr Chick to take part in a 7-a-side football tournament. Though ultimately we didn’t win, we performed with pride and progressed through to the champions section of the second stage after a fantastic runners-up placing in the first league. The first 2 games were particular highlights, as we won both with some excellent passing moves involving Harley, Rio and Maison and top-class finishing along with composed defending from Trai, Destiny and Brandon. In one of the final games we lost 1-0 (following some goalkeeping heroics from Harvey), hitting the post near to the end which would have given us a shot at qualification to the semi-finals. We also brought a key game back to 2-1 with a goal made by Lyrik and scored by Francis, only to concede 2 more when pushing for the equaliser. All in all, we could be proud of our positive attitudes and the effort that we put in for each other, and can now look forward to working hard in football club ready for the upcoming league season.

Girls Football Tournament

Girls football team 22nd sept 2017(1)

Congratulations to all who took part in the girls football tournament at East Brighton Park! For some it was the first time they had played in a football match and they did their school proud! The girls from Year 4, 5 and 6 won one of their three matches and lost two.  Their victory against Carden Primary was 2-1 to CAW and included goals from Summer and Aliyah.  In the other games we lost a close match 1-0 to Benfield, and were beaten by an excellent Balfour team 4-0. The girls played really well in all three matches, worked well as a team and are looking forward to playing in more matches this year.  Well done girls!
