Reading

We believe passionately in the importance of developing a love for reading At City Academy whilst ensuring that all children develop the skills they need to become confident readers with a deep understanding of the written word.

Reading in EYFS and Key Stage One

We begin reading in EYFS by developing early reading behaviour and endeavour to have children Year 1 ready so they can access more books and comprehend to a higher level. In Year 1 our basic reading skills teaching continues with an emphasis on using phonics strategies and learning high frequency words. The children are taught both 1:1 and in whole class sessions to further deepen their understanding.

In Year 2 1:1 sessions continue for those children who require it and as they become more confident and skilled we encourage them to join the Accelerated Reader programme. Year 2 children are taught comprehension skills through quality key texts in addition to AR and 1:1 sessions.

Reading in Key Stage 2

Accelerated Reader Programme

All children in Years 3-6 follow the accelerated reader programme.  An explanation of which can be found at the bottom of this page.

Our Harry Potter themed library is available for all children to use throughout the school day, enabling them to change their books and to quiz when ready. Specially selected student librarians are on hand at lunchtime to help others in their book selection.

In addition to the Accelerated Reader Programme, all children in KS2 receive daily whole class teaching in the skills of reading and reading comprehension. Quality key texts are shared and analysed to enable our children to develop through the progression of skills from the National Curriculum. In year 6 there is an additional focus on SATs skills to prepare the children for May.
