Year 2 Home Learning Offer SCROLL TO BOTTOM FOR LATEST UPDATES

Below is a range of documents, links and information about the offer of education during the school closures. Scroll down for updates which will be uploaded on a Monday and Thursday morning. 

Overview

Your child will have taken home, or will is invited to collect, a pack of learning. Inside you will find the following which will also be uploaded to the website under the relevant subject section

  • Maths challenges (with an answer book)
  • A list of maths songs and games that are relevant to our curriculum
  • A sheet of reading activities. Use your school books and books from your home for these.
  • Spellings for the year group and ideas of how to practice them
  • PE activities to keep you active
  • 3 writing challenges with an idea, planning section and handwriting paper
  • A book with half lined half blank pages for children to record their learning
  • A pencil and a pen
  • Maths With Parents log in details
  • Paragon Home Learning for this term (Woodland Indians) and next term (Victorians)

In addition to this, some other documents have been uploaded digitally to each section to give you lots of ideas for learning. 

There is also various links under each section that you can use to support learning.

Twinkl is an educational resource website with thousands of activities, ideas, stories and more. It is currently being offered free to parents with the code: UKTWINKLHELPS

Each Monday and Thursday an update will be given at the top of this page to let you know what the focus is and what activities have been set on Purple Mash. 

Your child should have come home from school with several books from the school library and two from the class book corner. Please enjoy reading these and take care of them so they can be returned when we reopen. 

Reading

Here is a list of brilliant books for Year 2 children - how many can you read? Many are uploaded as 'read-a-longs' on Youtube if you can't get a physcial copy.

The brilliant children's author Oliver Jeffers is reading a book a day during this period. He live broadcasts them at 6pm everyday and then uploads them to this website

Serial Mash

Purple Mash have released a section called Serial Mash to all Purple Mash users, which is usually an extra service. The Diamonds section has lots of e-books, chapter by chapter, with acommpanying quizzes and activities - a bit like Accelerated Reader that many children already do.  

Books will be set as extra challenges as part of the reading learning twice a week, but feel free to explore this part of the website too.

Year 2 Home Learning Offer - Week 1 Monday (23.03.20)

Monday 23rd March - key areas of learning for the next 3 days

 

Maths: Maths With Parents - Subtracting with regrouping. Use the First Next Last in the home learning pack to help. If you are up for an extra challenge you could complete the subtraction section of the maths booklet. You could also make dienes by using sticks, paper or other small objects! 

Purple Mash - Telling the Time Quiz  (to the hour and half past)

Writing: One writing activity from the pack and one from the linked writing to our current topic

Reading: Read your book from school and complete one of the activities. How long does it take you to get BINGO and do them all?! If you are up for an extra challenge, go onto Serial Mash and find Max and the Pirates of Puddleton Bay. Can you read and complete the activities that go with it? You could do a chapter a day. 

Spellings: /dge/ /g/ spelling pattern. Activity Y2 AUT1 W2 Spelling quiz has been set on Purple Mash. Check the spellzone website for some information on the patterns first.

Science: Create a contraption to save an egg from smashing after being dropped from a height. What knowledge of materials can you use? 

Book of the week: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lxBq9nJkig Egg Drop by Mini Grey - this book gave us the idea to make an egg protector to save the poor egg from smashing. 

Paragon: Woodland Indian activity on Purple Mash and choose one of the home learning activities and complete it!

Computing: 2paint A Picture. This has been set as a 2do but you can find it by searching for 2Paint A Picture on Purple Mash. This is a continuation of learning in class where we have done pointalism and impressionist art. When it opens, you will get the menu pictured below. Choose any one to start with but try and have a go at all of them. Top Tip! Research the artists and examples of these styles by using google.

Thursday 26th March - key areas of learning for the next 2 days

 

Maths: Maths With Parents - Two digit addition with partitioning. Please note, the children in the video use the word 'unit' instead of 'ones'. Please remind children that 'ones' is the correct word to use!   Sum Swap, Bargain Buys and Secret Number are the challenges for this learning. Enjoy. A huge well done to the 3 Greenfinch children who completed the Monday challenge. Let's see how many we can have on this one! 

Purple Mash - Time - Quarter Past activity. Remember to use your counting in 5s to help you as we know that quarter past is the same as 15 minutes past the hour. You can also use the time songs and games in the links above and our Human Clock actions! 

Writing: One different writing activity from the pack and another from the linked writing to our current topic.

Reading: Read your book from school and complete one of the activities. How long does it take you to get BINGO and do them all?! If you are up for an extra challenge, go onto Serial Mash and find Zara and the lost cat. Can you read and complete the activities that go with it? You could do a chapter a day.

Science: To finish our learning on materials, can you choose 3 properties of materials from the word bank at the end of the page? Create a venn or carrol diagram (examples at the bottom of this section) and search your house to find things that could fit into each section of your diagram. You could take a photo and stick it in your home learning book, or you could draw what you create.

Science: Have a go at the 'Matching Objects' game on Purple Mash. You have to match the objects with the material they are made from. Remember everything we have learnt about materials already.

Computing: This week we start a new focus on making music! On Purple Mash you'll find a piece of simple music which I have started. Can you add an instrument to make it more exciting? 
Drag the pictures of instruments into the boxes and listen to how it sounds using the play button. The bar at the top controls the bpm (how fast or slow the music plays) and the triangles down the side control the volume of each one.

We've also attached the teacher guide here to help any grown ups see how the learning progresses.
